  Route 'A'

Primarily you need to go to the DVLA website and order a D2 Pack which includes forms D2 and D4 which you can find on the gov.uk website

You must undergo a Medical Examination, Form D4 must be completed by a doctor at he examination and be signed by you in their presence. The fee for this service varies considerably from GP to GP, we can put you in touch with a Shrewsbury GP who will do the Medical Examination for £35, please contact us for details

With a successfully completed D4 Medical Examination Form, you now need to complete Form D2 for provisional licence entitlement in for your selected category and post both forms including both parts of your driving licence to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BR. There is currently no Fee for adding provisional category C to your licence. (We can help you to complete the forms if necessary at no extra charge)

You will have to complete and pass both parts of an official driving theory test which include a multiple-choice theory Test and a Hazard Perception Test. You can book your test at the official gov.uk website. Pricing is currently £55 for the multiple-choice test and £15 for the hazard perception test, which you'll pay for when booking the tests

Once you have passed your official theory test and have received your driving licence back from DVLA showing your provisional entitlement its time to get in touch with us so we can book your vocational test and training

You will also need the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) initial qualification which has 4 parts before you start driving as a professional driver:

  • part 1 - Theory test (this includes 2 separate tests - multiple-choice and hazard perception)
  • part 2 - Driver CPC case studies test (computer-based exercise with 7 studies based on real-life situations - e.g. driving in icy conditions)
  • part 3 - Driving ability test
  • part 4 - Driver CPC practical demonstration test (this takes 30 minutes - you will need to show you can keep your vehicle safe and secure, e.g. loading your vehicle safely)

But don't despair by this point you will already have completed part 1 and part 3, the Driver CPC Case Study and the Driver CPC practical Demonstration can be booked online at the official gov.uk website, it is however a good idea to get these last two parts underway as soon as possible to avoid slowing your progress into your new professional driving career.

We strongly recommend obtaining the following study material:

(if you wish) to progress to the next stage, which is Category C+E (Artic). Their is no waiting period betweenlicences, you just simply need to receive the licence back from DVLA with ‘Provisional’ C+E added.
